From the Road: Tohoku in Four Movement

Leaving the serenity of KAI Akiu, we aimed for one of Tōhoku’s most famous autumn spectacles—Naruko Gorge.

We set out early toward Naruko Gorge, the sky flawless, the air crisp, the leaves at their fiery peak. But three kilometers from the gorge, traffic stopped—literally. Cars moved inches at a time, with no end in sight. After nearly an hour of creeping forward, we turned around.

Sometimes you learn the hard way that beauty draws a crowd. Our advice: avoid Naruko Gorge on weekends in fall. Go midweek or go early—but never on Sunday!.
